DUNKIRK, NY (WNY News Now) – A large barge ran ashore overnight in the Town of Dunkirk.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the craft detached from its tow on Lake Erie around midnight Wednesday before floating to the beach along Van Buren Point.

Due to current choppy water conditions, recovery efforts for the barge are on hold.

Officials tell us when the surf calms, which will likely happen on Thursday or Friday, the owner is responsible for removing the barge from the shoreline.

The Coast Guard did not have a specific cargo manifest, however said barge is hauling a natural resource like sand, gravel or coal, which pose no health risks to the environment.
