ALLEGANY, NY (WNY News Now) – An Olean man is accused of stealing a vehicle at gunpoint in Cattaraugus County.

On Saturday, New York State Police arrested John Tait after he allegedly stole a vehicle on North Third Street in the Village of Allegany.

Specifically, Tait is accused of threatening the vehicle’s driver with a semi-automatic handgun while demanding the keys to his car so Tait could “drive to Buffalo.”

The 24-year-old was later located and arrested in the Town of Ellicottville.

Tait has since been charged with felony robbery, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.

Troopers said Tait was remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of bail.

An order of protection was issued and provided to the victim.

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Cattaraugus County District Attorney’s Office assisted in this investigation.
