WESTFIELD, NY (WNY News Now) — A push to restore a popular Lake Erie harbor in Chautauqua County took a big step forward this week.

On Monday, Congressman Nick Langworthy announced the Army Corp of Engineers will start dredging the Barcelona Harbor in May, three months ahead of schedule.

Last month at this time, the Congressman met with county and town officials who outlined safety risks and shoaling that have formed after severe weather storms have pummeled the county in recent years.

Langworthy met with the Army Corp of Engineers to petition for harbor dredging. As a result of talks, the Army Corp agreed to move forward with the dredging ahead of schedule and just in time for the summer season, a period the Congressman says is critical for the local economies along Lake Erie.

Congressman Nick Langworthy represents the 23rd Congressional District of New York which includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties and parts of Erie County.
