WEST ELLICOTT, NY (WNY News Now) – Construction of a new retail store in West Ellicott is taking shape.

On Tuesday the sign outside of Chautauqua County’s first Target store was installed.

Two years ago, the nationally known retailer confirmed they purchased the former K-mart at 975 Fairmount Avenue in West Ellicott.

The acquisition was not without some fanfare, as the corporation sued the Board of Assessors in Chautauqua County seeking a lower tax assessment value after purchase.

Efforts to remodel the 117,000 square foot building have been underway since last September.

This week, crews with Scrufari Construction were hard at work making changes to the building’s façade and painting the structure’s exterior.

Seeing the construction come together is exciting news for many in the community.

“We’ve lost several retailers in the area over the last several years, there has been a large decline, so I’m super excited about what Target offers,” explained Legislator Lisa Vanstrom who represents District 15. “I’m enthused that they are going to come to our community, located next to Wegmans which is super popular.”

While a Target spokesperson has confirmed the building’s purchase and plans to open for business, it is still unclear when a grand opening might take place.
