MAYVILLE, NY (WNY News Now) – Chautauqua County has received approximately 10,000 KN95 masks from New York State Thursday, to help combat hazardous smoke in our region.

All of this is in response to the Air Quality Index hitting a point that Western New York hasn’t seen in many years.

Health officials in Chautauqua County have issued a strong recommendation to either cancel or postpone outdoor activities.

The Health Department also recommends staying indoors as much as possible, and if you need to go outside to wear the appropriate face coverings.

“I would personally recommend, if folks had to go out during times that there is a light smoke, or the air quality index levels are greater than 150,” explained Dr. Michael Faulk M.D., Chief Medical Officer and Interim Public Health Director. “If those folks have to go to the grocery store or to an appointment, that perhaps they consider the use of a KN95 or N95 mask.”

Individuals and small businesses can get masks from the County Health Department in Mayville. Municipalities and Large businesses should call the Chautauqua County Office of Emergency services at 716 753-4341.
