JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – The Jamestown School District has narrowed down its choices for the new school nickname after retiring the ‘Red Raiders’ name and is now asking for the public’s vote.
Following a community survey and discussions with students, the Jamestown High School Nickname Committee is now seeking the public’s input on making a final decision.
The choices are “Catamounts” or “Red and Green” to accompany the “big cat” mascot that was adopted back in 2022.
Though it was a popular choice, the district ultimately decided against using the nickname “Jaguars” to eliminate any confusion.
“The committee made the decision to eliminate ‘Jaguars’ so that we could avoid confusion internally with Jefferson Middle School,” Drake noted. “Additionally, our ‘big cat’ imagery would need adjustments in order to resemble a jaguar.”
The public is asked to cast their vote using the survey provided below. The survey will be open until September 30th.
