(WNY News Now) – Thirteen iconic landmarks in New York will shine with golden lights today in honor of Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, as announced by Governor Kathy Hochul.
Albany – Governor Kathy Hochul has revealed that New York State will pay tribute to Gold Star Mothers and Families by illuminating 13 prominent landmarks with golden lights on Sunday, September 24. Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel in the line of duty.
In her statement, Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the state and nation, recognizing the enduring strength of their families. This annual tradition, observed on the last Sunday of September, traces its roots back to World War I and signifies the profound sacrifices made in service to the nation. State capitals nationwide join in this tribute by bathing buildings and landmarks in gold light.
Among the landmarks set to be illuminated are One World Trade Center, Niagara Falls, and the Empire State Plaza. New York State has also established vital programs, such as the Gold Star Parent Annuity program and the MERIT Scholarship, to provide ongoing support to Gold Star Parents. These efforts are complemented by collaboration between the state and Gold Star organizations, ensuring widespread awareness and access to these programs.
