(WNY News Now) – Erie County District Attorney John Flynn proudly showcased the artistic endeavors of Buffalo Public School students in the “Mural Mania!” summer art program, unveiling their thought-provoking project titled “Peace, Justice, Community: Perspectives of Youth Artists 2023” at the District Attorney’s Office.

Buffalo – In a celebration of artistic expression and community collaboration, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn extended a warm invitation to Buffalo Public School students who participated in the “Mural Mania!” summer art program. The culmination of their creative efforts was revealed in a series of captivating murals now adorning the reception area of the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

Attending the unveiling ceremony were not only the talented student artists but also their caregivers, Buffalo Public School District Superintendent Dr. Tonja M. Williams, Law Clerk Brandon Portis representing 8th Judicial District Administrative Judge Hon. Kevin M. Carter, Erie County 1st District Legislator Howard J. Johnson, Jr., and Dr. Michele Agosto, Director of Arts for Buffalo Public Schools.

“Mural Mania!” stands out as a unique and immersive five-week summer arts program catering to a select group of Buffalo Public School students entering grades 6 – 12. Under the guidance of Buffalo-based visual artist James Cooper, III, the students collaborated on the design concept and execution of the artwork, centering their theme on peace, justice, and community. Additionally, the students composed poetry inspired by the profound themes depicted in the paintings.

The central installation of the murals took place in the reception area of the District Attorney’s Office, situated on the 6th floor of the Erie County Court building. Notably, additional student-created paintings grace the 7th floor of the office, providing a comprehensive display of the students’ artistic achievements.

To enhance their creative process, the students were granted the opportunity to tour the historic Erie County Court building and delve into its rich history. On July 26, 2023, 20 students from the summer arts program visited the Erie County Legislature, engaging with Legislator Howard Johnson to gain insights into the Public Art Act. The students received a captivating history lesson from State Supreme Court Justice John Licata and Court Officer Wood about the courthouse’s legacy.

A pivotal moment occurred during a roundtable discussion, where Administrative Judge Kevin M. Carter, Chief John Feroleto of the office’s Major Crimes Unit, Assistant District Attorney Noha Elnakib, and Assistant District Attorney Justin Caldwell explored the intersections of justice, art, and poetry within the context of a criminal trial.

The collaborative effort between the District Attorney’s Office and these aspiring young artists not only resulted in visually striking murals but also fostered a deeper understanding of justice and its representation through art and poetry. The “Peace, Justice, Community: Perspectives of Youth Artists 2023” project stands as a testament to the power of community engagement and the transformative potential of the arts in inspiring meaningful conversations.
