(WNY News Now) – Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled a $100 million investment aimed at fortifying New York’s roadways and repaving key sections affected by extreme weather conditions. This funding will support projects across 66 locations covering nearly 568 lane miles.

New York – New York State has announced a strategic $100 million allocation to address the impact of extreme weather on the state’s roadways. This initiative, designed to enhance the resiliency of critical transportation infrastructure, will primarily fund repaving projects spanning 66 locations and approximately 568 lane miles. The announcement comes as part of an overarching effort by the Governor to elevate the state’s infrastructure, with a particular focus on ensuring the safety and efficiency of New York’s highways.

“From a devastating blizzard to historic flooding, we are living in a time of record-breaking weather events which have left many roads across New York State in need of repair and rejuvenation,” Governor Hochul said. “This $100 million will lengthen the lifespan of dozens of roads across the State, making them more resilient in the face of future extreme weather conditions.”

The funding injection dovetails with the ongoing commitment reflected in the $32.9 billion State Department of Transportation’s five-year capital plan. This comprehensive plan, inclusive of federal formula funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, stands as a testament to the state’s historic dedication to road and bridge repair and modernization. The newly announced $100 million is poised to play a pivotal role in the restoration of hundreds of lane miles impacted by extreme weather events, ensuring a more robust and reliable transportation network.

Scheduled to commence in the upcoming spring, the repaving projects are geographically distributed across the state. The Western New York Region, allocated $12.9 million, will see investments in key areas including Route 242 in the Towns of Franklinville and Ellicottville, I-86 in Chautauqua County, and Route 324 in the Town of Grand Island, among others. These targeted investments reflect a strategic approach to address specific needs and challenges in different regions.

Noteworthy allocations include $1.8 million to resurface I-86, Route 305, and Route 446 in the Cuba area, Town and Village of Cuba, Allegany County, and $1.0 million earmarked for Route 19 from the Pennsylvania State line to Stannards in the Hamlet of Stannards and the Town of Willing, Allegany County. These investments underscore a commitment to both urban and rural areas, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to infrastructure enhancement.

The funding announcement aligns with broader efforts to fortify New York’s transportation network against the challenges posed by extreme weather, thereby ensuring the safety of commuters and facilitating smoother local commerce and tourism. With the state facing the imminent threat of winter weather, this investment signifies a proactive measure to mitigate potential disruptions and enhance the overall resilience of New York’s infrastructure.
