(WNY News Now) – A 43-year-old Grand Island man was arraigned Monday on charges including Murder in the Second Degree and Assault, following an incident where he allegedly caused a fatal crash that killed one and injured four.

Buffalo – Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced the arraignment of 43-year-old Ronald F. Olson, II before State Supreme Court Justice Paul B. Wojtaszek. Olson faces charges of Murder in the Second Degree, five counts of Assault in the First Degree, and five counts of Assault in the Second Degree.

The indictment alleges that on March 20, 2023, at 5:00 a.m., Olson approached a Jeep Liberty parked at a Buffalo gas station, attempting to sell clothing. After an apparent dispute, Olson chased the Jeep in his Chevrolet Silverado, colliding with its driver’s side near Benwood Avenue. The impact caused the Jeep to hit a light pole and then a tree.

Tragically, the driver, 18-year-old Jarel Buchanan, lost his life at the scene. Four passengers, aged 17 to 19, sustained serious injuries but survived.

Olson, held without bail, awaits a court date. If convicted of Murder in the Second Degree, he could face 25 years to life in prison. The motive behind the alleged chase remains under investigation.

The DA’s office has not scheduled a return court date as of now.
