(WNY News Now) – Mayville, NY — As the holiday season approaches, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) collaborates with Chautauqua County Law Enforcement Agencies to emphasize the importance of responsible driving. The joint effort aims to raise awareness about the hazards of drunk driving, urging motorists to choose sobriety over potential consequences.
December, traditionally a festive period, unfortunately witnesses a surge in alcohol-impaired-driving incidents, resulting in over 4,500 fatalities during the 2017-2021 December months. Shockingly, December 2021 alone saw 1,013 lives lost in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes, with male drivers significantly more affected. In December 2021, drunk male drivers were involved in fatal crashes at a rate nearly four times higher than their female counterparts (721 vs. 208).
The NHTSA highlights the alarming statistic that in 2021, 31% of all traffic fatalities in the United States involved alcohol-impaired drivers, representing a 14.2% increase from the previous year. Chautauqua County Traffic Safety Committee and NHTSA emphasize the importance of responsible choices, with Sheriff Quattrone stating, “Drunk driving is not acceptable behavior.” Planning a sober ride home before heading to festivities is crucial, and various resources are available for this purpose.
The campaign encourages individuals to utilize options such as designating a sober driver, taking a taxi, or using rideshare services. Law enforcement agencies stress the significance of reporting drunk drivers to ensure public safety. The financial repercussions of a DUI serve as a deterrent, with costs potentially reaching $10,000. Choosing a sober ride is not just a wise decision but also a cost-effective one.
The message is clear: no one is immune to the dangers of drunk driving. Designating a sober driver or seeking alternative transportation prevents dire consequences, including legal issues, impounded vehicles, job loss, or compromised security clearances. The campaign emphasizes collective responsibility, urging friends to intervene if someone is about to drive drunk and reinforcing the importance of pre-planning transportation for the evening.
Reminding individuals that a few dollars spent on a ride is a minimal expense compared to the potential fallout of drunk driving, the campaign encourages responsible decision-making. Drunk individuals are urged to hand over their keys to a sober driver and discourage friends from getting into vehicles with impaired drivers.
The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ initiative underscores the critical need for proactive measures to ensure safe celebrations. Detailed information about the enforcement period and responsible driving choices is available at www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/drunk-driving.
