(WNY News Now) – Niagara Falls State Park – Community leaders gathered to unveil the state-of-the-art Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center, a $46 million facility at Niagara Falls State Park, enhancing the visitor experience and supporting regional revitalization.
Western New York celebrated a milestone with the grand opening of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center at Niagara Falls State Park. The $46 million state-of-the-art facility, unveiled by community leaders, is set to provide modern amenities for the millions of visitors who flock to the park annually. The Welcome Center will serve as a gateway, offering information on the Niagara Falls area and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
In addition to the Welcome Center, two complementary projects were announced during the opening ceremony. The Niagara Arts and Cultural Center auditorium will undergo an $8.5 million renovation, restoring its historic grandeur while integrating modern technology to accommodate live productions. Simultaneously, historic buildings at Oakwood Cemetery will undergo restoration, aligning with the overarching goal of improving the cultural and historical aspects of the Niagara Falls experience.
Designed by GWWO Architects of Baltimore and constructed by R.P. Oakhill Building Company of Buffalo, the 28,000-square-foot Welcome Center features glass walls and a low roof to maximize views of the Falls. The facility includes new ticketing and information desks, concession spaces, restrooms, a rooftop PV array, and a separate restroom building. The project also repurposes the adjacent 7,000-square-foot regional administration building, adding a multi-use community room, regional archives, and offices for interpretive staff.
The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, contributing $8 million, played a significant role in the realization of the Welcome Center. Named in honor of Wilson, the former owner of the Buffalo Bills and co-founder of the American Football League, the foundation’s support reflects a commitment to enhancing the Western New York community.
The final phase of the project will introduce interpretive museum space, featuring immersive exhibits on natural, industrial, and Indigenous American history. This addition aligns with the broader $150 million revitalization of Niagara Falls State Park, initiated in 2011. The park’s landscape revitalization plan, inspired by Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision, includes improvements to major viewing areas and the removal of the Niagara Scenic Parkway.
Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the nation, attracts over 9 million visitors annually. The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center adds a new dimension to the park’s appeal, promising an enriched experience for all who explore this national treasure. The project’s completion reflects a collaborative effort supported by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation and managed by the Natural Heritage Trust, contributing to the ongoing regional revitalization partnership, aiming for comprehensive economic development in Western New York.
