(WNY News Now) – New York – New York Attorney General Letitia James has voiced strong opposition to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s executive order, issued Thursday, prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in events aligned with their gender identity within county facilities.

In a controversial move, County Executive Blakeman’s order mandates sports entities to designate teams based on an athlete’s assigned sex at birth when seeking permits for county-run facilities. Specifically, transgender women and girls are barred from participating in events corresponding to their gender identity, while transgender men and boys are permitted to compete in events aligned with their gender. Blakeman contends that this measure aims to uphold fairness in competition.

New York Attorney General Letitia James today issued the following statement in response to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s announcement of an executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from competing at county-run athletic facilities:

“This executive order is transphobic and deeply dangerous. In New York, we have laws that protect our beautifully diverse communities from hate and discrimination of any and every kind. My office is charged with enforcing and upholding those laws, and we stand up to those who violate them and trespass on the rights of marginalized communities. We are reviewing our legal options.”
