(WNY News Now) – New York – Governor Kathy Hochul has announced six key appointments to the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Commission, highlighting New York’s dedication to honoring AAPI Heritage Month.

In a vibrant tribute to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed six distinguished individuals to the AAPI Commission. This move aligns with her proclamation declaring May as AAPI Heritage Month in New York, accompanied by the illumination of 14 state landmarks in pink and light blue on May 28.

“New York is home to more than 1.8 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders – a true testament to the diversity of our great state,” Governor Hochul remarked. “Our vibrant AAPI community is a point of pride, and our goal in celebrating this beautiful heritage is to ensure every New Yorker feels safe, supported, and valued.”

The AAPI Commission, established by legislation in November 2023, will advise on policies and coordinate programs to enhance the welfare of New York’s AAPI community. Governor Hochul has shown unwavering support for this community, demonstrated by her endorsement of legislation making Lunar New Year and Diwali public school holidays. Additionally, historic investments were made last year, including a $30 million fund to empower community organizations to combat hate and enhance well-being. Director of Asian American Affairs, Shawn Ma, emphasized the commission’s role, saying, “The formation of this Commission represents a thoughtful approach to supporting our AAPI communities. I am confident that the advice provided by the Commission will greatly benefit New York’s efforts towards fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all.”
