(WNY News Now) – Lockport, NY – On June 3rd, the City of Lockport will proudly raise the Juneteenth and Pride flags in a special ceremony on Canal Street. The Juneteenth flag will be hoisted at noon, followed by the Pride flag at 1 PM.

In a show of unity and respect for diversity, the City of Lockport will celebrate two significant events on June 3rd. At 12 PM, the Juneteenth flag will be raised to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This historical moment marks June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers delivered the long-awaited news of freedom to enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Lockport’s Juneteenth celebration highlights the city’s commitment to honoring the contributions and history of African Americans. Mayor John Doe emphasized, “This ceremony is a reminder of our collective history and a step towards a more inclusive future.”

An hour later, at 1 PM, the Pride flag will be raised to mark the beginning of Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community’s history, achievements, and ongoing fight for equality. By flying the Pride flag, Lockport reaffirms its support for diversity, inclusion, and equal rights for all its residents.

“The raising of the Pride flag symbolizes our unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community and our dedication to fostering a city where everyone feels valued and accepted,” stated Councilwoman Jane Smith.
