Governor Hochul Kicks Off Pride Month with Statewide Celebrations

Governor Kathy Hochul has declared June 2024 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in New York State, marking the occasion with a series of vibrant celebrations and initiatives. Progress flags will be raised and state landmarks illuminated in pride colors, symbolizing New York’s commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.

“Pride Month is a time of celebration and a reminder to continue in our efforts to uplift the rights of the LGBTQ+ community here in New York State,” said Governor Hochul. “New Yorkers of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions deserve to be safe, heard, and valued. The State of New York stands with and supports the LGBTQ+ community.”

As part of the celebrations, the progress pride flag will be flown at various state parks, the State Capitol, and other significant locations starting June 1. Additionally, state landmarks including One World Trade Center and the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge will be lit in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple on June 1 and from June 23 to 30.

The governor highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to support LGBTQ+ individuals, citing a $1 million expansion to the Lorena Borjas Transgender and Non-binary Wellness and Equity Fund. This initiative supports workforce development for the transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary community.

Moreover, Hochul’s administration has previously allocated significant funds to bolster LGBTQ+ rights and resources. In June 2023, the state announced a $33.5 million investment in LGBTQ+ support services, $20 million for senior housing projects, $12.5 million for the American LGBTQ+ Museum, and $1 million for youth suicide prevention targeting TGNCNB New Yorkers. These efforts are complemented by legislative measures to protect LGBTQ+ youth seeking gender-affirming care.

Empire State Development’s Division of Tourism, through its I LOVE NY LGBTQ initiative, will also play a pivotal role in the celebrations, promoting travel and LGBTQ+ events across the state. The I LOVE NY LGBTQ website offers a comprehensive guide to Pride events and LGBTQ-owned businesses, ensuring that both residents and visitors can fully partake in the festivities.
