(WNY News Now) – JAMESTOWN, NY – On July 6, 2024, at 12:23 PM, the Jamestown Fire Department (JFD) responded to a fire incident at UPMC Chautauqua located at 207 Foote Ave. The fire, originating in the mechanical room of the facility’s east elevator penthouse, was swiftly managed, preventing major damage.

At 12:23 PM, a box alarm from UPMC Chautauqua alerted JFD to the presence of smoke. Initial reports from the facility staff indicated an odor of smoke, and upon arrival, Engine 4 observed smoke emanating from the roof. The JFD’s rapid and coordinated response ensured the situation was contained efficiently.

Engine 4 and Car 1, accompanied by UPMC Chautauqua staff, located the source of the fire in the east elevator penthouse. Inside the mechanical room, they found burning electrical components of the elevator system. Engine 4 promptly used a dry chemical extinguisher to douse the flames. Meanwhile, Engine 3 and Ladder 1 crews stood by, ready to utilize the building’s standpipe if necessary.

The area was ventilated using electrical exhaust fans to clear the smoke. Fire department personnel shut down power to all three east elevators, coordinating closely with UPMC Chautauqua staff throughout the incident.

The response was a collaborative effort, with assistance from the Jamestown Police Department (JPD), ALSTAR, UPMC Chautauqua staff, Board of Public Utilities (BPU), Department of Development (DOD), Department of Public Works (DPW), and the Red Cross. The natural gas supply was also monitored by National Fuel representatives.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined but is believed to be accidental, involving the elevator’s electrical equipment.
