(WNY News Now) – Pennsylvania – As Tropical Storm Debby bears down on Pennsylvania, state officials warn residents to prepare for potentially dangerous flooding and to avoid travel during the storm.

Harrisburg, PA – Tropical Storm Debby is set to bring significant rainfall across Pennsylvania starting tonight, with the heaviest downpours expected through Friday night. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) are urging residents to stay alert, particularly in areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall is expected to begin after midnight and persist throughout Friday, tapering off after midnight. Central Pennsylvania is projected to receive the heaviest rainfall, but flash flooding is possible across the state, particularly in low-lying areas and along roadways.

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll emphasized the importance of avoiding water-covered roads, stating, “Even shallow, swiftly flowing water can wash a car from a roadway. Our crews have been preparing for days, but the public must remain vigilant.”

PEMA Director Randy Padfield advised residents to review their emergency plans and stay informed via weather alerts. “This storm could cause significant flooding. We encourage everyone to avoid unnecessary travel and to be ready with their family emergency plans,” Padfield said.

Residents are advised to monitor conditions through the 511PA service, which provides real-time traffic and weather updates. Additionally, PennDOT has cautioned against driving on flooded roads and urged motorists to adhere to road closures and safety barricades. The mantra, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” remains crucial during such events.

State officials also recommend having multiple ways to receive weather alerts and knowing the difference between a watch and a warning. A watch signals favorable conditions for hazardous weather, while a warning means it’s time to take immediate protective actions.
