(WNY News Now) – Buffalo, NY – A Buffalo man, previously convicted on firearm charges, is now facing an escape charge after leaving a residential reentry center, also known as a halfway house, without authorization.

Walter Stewart, 33, was arrested on August 30, 2024, following a criminal complaint charging him with escape from custody. This charge carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison. Stewart had been transferred in May 2024 from Ray Brook Federal Correctional Institution to CRJ Lighthouse Residential Reentry Center in Buffalo, a halfway house, to serve the remainder of his 58-month sentence for a prior firearm possession conviction.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Stewart left the facility on June 26, 2024, without authorization. After a two-month search, the U.S. Marshals Service located and apprehended him.

The investigation was led by the U.S. Marshals Service, under the direction of Marshal Charles Salina.

Stewart remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
