Mohammed Mia, 42, of Buffalo, was sentenced to 14 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision for the death of his father-in-law, 47-year-old Mohammed Hossain. The sentencing took place before State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges in Erie County on Monday.

The fatal attack occurred on October 24, 2021, when Mia unlawfully entered the home of his estranged wife, violating an existing order of protection. During the incident, Mia physically assaulted his wife, her mother, and her father. After throwing Hossain to the ground, Mia repeatedly punched and kicked him, leaving him unconscious with severe head trauma.

Emergency responders arrived to find Hossain unconscious, and he was taken to ECMC for treatment. His injuries ultimately proved fatal, as he died three days later on October 27, 2021. Both Mia’s wife and mother-in-law were also treated at ECMC for injuries, including broken teeth, cuts, and bruises.

Later that day, Mia was arrested after reporting to the police that he had been attacked by the three victims. He pleaded guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree in May 2024, a plea that was accepted with the consent of the victim’s family.

In addition to the prison sentence, final orders of protection were issued for the surviving victims, remaining in effect until November 2040. Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane commended the Buffalo Police Department’s Homicide and Special Victims Units for their role in the investigation.
