(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a frost advisory for several counties in Western New York, effective from 8 PM on October 17 until 10 AM on October 18. Areas under the advisory include Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, and Chautauqua Counties. Residents are urged to take immediate steps to protect sensitive outdoor plants, as temperatures are expected to drop into the lower to mid-30s overnight.
Frost formation is likely during the early morning hours, posing a threat to tender vegetation. The cold snap, while typical for this time of year, could lead to damage or loss of crops and garden plants if left uncovered. Simple protective measures, such as covering plants with cloths or moving potted plants indoors, can help minimize the impact of the frost.
The advisory warns that the coldest temperatures will occur in rural areas and valleys, where frost is more likely to develop. While urban centers may experience slightly higher temperatures, the risk to vegetation remains significant.
