(WNY News Now) – A father and son from Buffalo have been sentenced to prison for their roles in the brutal assault that led to the death of a 25-year-old man.
Buffalo, N.Y. – Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced the sentencing of Christopher L. Busby, 40, and his son, Daiquan A. Busby, 21, both of Buffalo, for their involvement in the fatal assault of Mikhail C. Scott. The incident occurred on the night of December 17, 2022, in an apartment building on Rodney Street in Buffalo.
The father and son, along with co-defendant Lewis A. Keys, attacked Scott, repeatedly punching, kicking, and dragging him down a flight of stairs from the apartment to the sidewalk. Scott sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Erie County Medical Center, where he later died. The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Christopher Busby was sentenced to five years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree. He entered his plea ahead of a jury trial that was scheduled to start the following week. His son, Daiquan Busby, received a more severe sentence of 7 ½ years in prison and five years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to the same charge of Manslaughter in the First Degree.
Their co-defendant, Lewis Keys, 24, also pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree for his role in the deadly assault and is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence, along with five years of post-release supervision.
Acting District Attorney Keane praised the efforts of the Buffalo Police Department in investigating the case, which resulted in the convictions of all three individuals involved. Assistant District Attorneys Ryan M. Flaherty, Cathleen M. Roemer, and Rebecca L. Schnirel prosecuted the case.
