(WNY News Now) – A powerful lake-effect snowstorm is poised to strike Allegany County, with potential for treacherous travel and widespread disruptions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Allegany County, effective from Wednesday evening through late Thursday night. This alert, issued at 2:18 PM on December 3, warns of heavy lake-effect snow potentially exceeding 7 inches in accumulation and wind gusts reaching 45 mph.

These conditions are expected to create considerable blowing and drifting snow, significantly impacting visibility and travel. The storm could also lead to downed tree branches and isolated power outages, particularly during the Wednesday night through Thursday night period.

Travel is anticipated to be extremely challenging, especially during peak commute hours. Motorists are advised to delay all non-essential travel. For those who must venture out, extreme caution is necessary. The NWS urges drivers to carry a winter storm kit, which should include essentials like tire chains, booster cables, a flashlight, a shovel, blankets, extra clothing, water, non-perishable food, and a first aid kit.

Residents are encouraged to make preparations at home, ensuring they have sufficient supplies to last through potential power outages or travel restrictions.
