(WNY News Now) – An Amherst man has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison for the killing of his mother during a domestic dispute. Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced that Om D. Samant, 36, received the minimum sentence permissible under a plea agreement for manslaughter in the first degree. He will also serve five years of post-release supervision.

On December 26, 2022, at approximately 11:33 a.m., Amherst Police responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Thistle Lea. Authorities discovered 58-year-old Jagruti Samant deceased inside the home, having suffered fatal injuries from being beaten and stabbed.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree manslaughter—a Class B violent felony—on October 16, 2024. The plea, which resolved the indictment against him, was supported by the victim’s family, who advocated for the agreed-upon sentence.
Assistant District Attorneys Frank A. Strano, Alexander J. Trunfio, and Deputy District Attorney John P. Feroleto led the prosecution.
