(WNY News Now) – A prior felon in Buffalo, NY, is returning to prison after federal investigators uncovered a fentanyl trafficking operation during a routine probation visit.
BUFFALO, N.Y.—Alexis Javier Centeno-Baez, 30, was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison following his conviction for possession with intent to distribute over 40 grams of fentanyl. U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara handed down the sentence, marking a significant turn in Centeno-Baez’s ongoing legal battles.
Centeno-Baez had a prior conviction in 2017, where he was sentenced to 63 months in prison for conspiracy and attempted possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of cocaine. After serving his sentence, he was placed on supervised release.
The recent charges stem from an October 17, 2022, probation check at Centeno-Baez’s residence. During the visit, a U.S. Probation officer noticed a suspicious brown paper bag in the kitchen. Centeno-Baez admitted the bag contained heroin and confessed to ongoing drug trafficking activities.
A search of his home revealed a large quantity of fentanyl, tramadol tablets, methamphetamine, marijuana, digital scales, ammunition, and $46,550 in cash. This discovery led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under Special Agent-in-Charge Frank Tarentino of the New York Field Division, along with the United States Probation Office, headed by Chief Probation Officer Timothy C. Englerth.
