(WNY News Now) – Severe winter weather is forecast to hit parts of New York, with heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerously low temperatures posing significant risks to travel and safety.

Residents in Chautauqua, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, and Oswego Counties should brace for a powerful winter storm starting Wednesday, January 1. Snowfall in Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, and Oswego Counties could reach 2 to 4 feet, with rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour at times. Chautauqua County is expected to see 1 to 3 feet of snow, accumulating at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Visibility will be severely reduced, and travel conditions will become hazardous. Wind speeds of 30-40 mph could bring down trees and power lines, while temperatures will feel as low as the single digits throughout the week.

Travel and Safety Tips:

  • Avoid Travel: Only travel if absolutely necessary. Expect road closures and significant delays.
  • Drive Safely: Clear snow off your vehicle, drive slowly, avoid cruise control, and leave extra space between vehicles. Roads may be slick even if they appear wet.
  • Safe Shoveling Practices: Wear warm clothing, stay hydrated, shovel small amounts of snow at a time, and take frequent breaks to avoid overexertion.

If stranded in a vehicle, prevent carbon monoxide poisoning by running the engine for 10 minutes each hour with windows slightly open and the exhaust pipe clear of snow.

Watch for Hypothermia:

Symptoms include confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and stiff muscles. Seek medical help immediately. If no assistance is available, warm the affected person slowly using warm liquids, dry clothing, and blankets.
