(WNY News Now) – A powerful snowstorm is set to impact Herkimer, Hamilton, and Erie Counties today, bringing heavy snow, low visibility, and dangerous travel conditions through the week.

A major winter storm will strike Herkimer, Hamilton, and Erie Counties starting today, January 1, with heavy snow, dangerous travel conditions, and cold temperatures expected to persist throughout the week.

In Hamilton and Herkimer Counties, residents can expect 2 to 3 feet of snow, with snowfall rates as high as 1 to 3 inches per hour. Erie County will see slightly less snow, with accumulations ranging from 1 to 2 feet, accompanied by 1 to 2 inches per hour at times. Visibility will be significantly reduced, making travel hazardous, and winds gusting at 35 to 45 mph could bring down trees and power lines, causing power outages.

Travel Advisory: Travel is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary. If you must drive, take precautions: clean off your vehicle, drive slowly, and avoid using cruise control. Roads may be slick, even if they appear merely wet, so ensure ample distance between your vehicle and others. Always stay behind snowplows to help keep the roads clear.

Safety Tips:

  • Shoveling: Dress warmly, stay hydrated, move small amounts of snow at a time, and take frequent breaks to avoid exhaustion.
  • Car Safety: If stranded, run your car’s engine for 10 minutes every hour while keeping the exhaust pipe clear of snow. Open the windows slightly for fresh air to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Hypothermia Awareness: Watch for signs of hypothermia, such as confusion, shivering, sleepiness, and difficulty speaking. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. If help isn’t nearby, warm up slowly with dry clothing, blankets, and warm liquids.
  • Generator Safety: If using a generator, ensure it’s placed outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. For more tips, visit generator safety.
