(WNY News Now) – The City of Dunkirk Police Department has issued a travel advisory, effective January 14, 2025, at 2:30 PM, due to deteriorating road conditions caused by strong winds and heavy snowfall.
DUNKIRK, NY – The Dunkirk Police Department, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office, Department of Public Works (DPW), and Dunkirk Fire Department (DFD), has implemented a travel advisory effective immediately. This measure is intended to ensure public safety amid worsening weather conditions.
Hazardous Conditions:
- Blowing Snow and Strong Winds: Reduced visibility, snow drifting, and potential road blockages.
- Downed Trees and Power Lines: Residents are reminded to treat all downed power lines as live and maintain a safe distance of at least 35 feet.
- Traffic Signal Outages: If traffic lights lose power, motorists must treat intersections as four-way stops.
Safety Guidelines:
- Avoid Non-Essential Travel: To ensure the safety of all, non-essential travel is strongly discouraged until conditions improve.
- Parking Regulations: Residents are urged to follow alternate parking rules by moving vehicles to the designated side of the street by 5 PM. Adherence to these regulations will facilitate snow plowing and enable emergency responders to access streets without obstruction. Vehicles impeding snow removal or creating traffic hazards may be subject to towing.
- Emergency Access: Keeping roadways clear is critical for snowplows and emergency vehicles to operate effectively.
Updates on the travel advisory will be provided as conditions evolve. Residents are encouraged to monitor local news and official channels for the latest information.
