(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of Western New York, effective from 6 p.m. on January 28 until 6 p.m. on January 29. Residents are urged to prepare for snow-covered roads, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions during this time.

What to Expect

  • Snowfall: Total snow accumulations are expected to reach 3 to 7 inches over the 24-hour period.
  • Winds: Gusts of up to 40 mph may cause areas of blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility.
  • Counties Affected:
    • Allegany County (3–6 inches of snow).
    • Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Northern Erie, Genesee, Livingston, and Ontario Counties (3–7 inches of snow).

Timing and Impacts

The advisory is expected to create slippery, snow-covered roadways and significantly reduced visibility, particularly during:

  • The Tuesday evening commute (January 28).
  • The Wednesday morning commute (January 29).

Safety Recommendations

Drivers should slow down, maintain extra following distance, and exercise caution while navigating affected roadways. Blowing snow may obscure road markings and create whiteout conditions in open areas.
Residents are encouraged to submit snow reports through the NWS website or social media channels to aid in weather monitoring efforts.
