(WNY News Now) – MACHIAS, NY – A 63-year-old Ashford man was arrested in connection with an attempted robbery and assault that took place earlier this month in the Town of Machias, according to Sheriff Eric A. Butler.

Authorities took James K. Denaro into custody on January 31, 2025, at approximately 10:24 a.m. following an investigation into a reported assault on January 14 at a Sunset Dr. address in Machias. Investigators determined that Denaro attempted to rob the victim and assaulted them with a knife.

Denaro was processed and arraigned in the Town of Machias Court on charges of Attempted Robbery in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree. He was remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail without bail and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date for further proceedings.

As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
