(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – A former United States Postal Service (USPS) employee has pleaded guilty to mail theft, admitting to stealing and tampering with mail while on duty.
Christopher Porter, 37, of Angola, NY, entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo, U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced. Porter faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Franz M. Wright and Andrew J. Henning, Porter worked as a City Carrier for the West Seneca Post Office from 2021 to May 2022. Investigators determined that in October 2021, he stole an envelope containing gift cards for Wegmans and Target, which he then gave to his wife. Additionally, in March 2022, Porter opened and rifled through multiple pieces of mail, delaying their delivery.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Field Office, led by Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Modafferi.
Porter is scheduled for sentencing on July 18, 2025, before Judge Vilardo.
