(WNY News Now) – Buffalo, NY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Southern Tier, particularly areas east of Allegany County. The warning is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight due to strong winds and low humidity, creating dangerous fire conditions.

Weather Conditions and Fire Risk

  • Winds: South at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph.
  • Humidity: As low as 17%, significantly increasing fire spread potential.
  • Impact: Any fires that ignite could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

Precautionary Measures

Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning, as dry fuels combined with gusty winds heighten wildfire risks. Additionally, New York State’s annual Burn Ban remains in effect through May 14, prohibiting open burning to reduce fire hazards.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, follow local fire restrictions, and report any signs of uncontrolled fires to emergency services.
