(WNY News Now) – Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Hugh D. Smith and Marissa A. Sampson after a traffic stop on June 8, 2025, led to the seizure of methamphetamine, cocaine, controlled substances, and a loaded handgun in Ashford, New York.

On June 8, 2025, at approximately 2:00 PM, deputies from the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in the Town of Ashford on a vehicle driven by Marissa A. Sampson, 33, of Springville, New York. During the stop, deputies observed drug paraphernalia in plain view inside the vehicle, prompting a search.

The search uncovered a quantity of suspected methamphetamine, cocaine, various controlled substance pills, and additional drug paraphernalia. Deputies also found a loaded handgun inside the vehicle.

Sampson was charged with five counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the seventh degree and Criminal Possession of a Firearm. Also arrested was Hugh D. Smith, 53, of Colden, New York, who faced charges of Criminal Possession of a Firearm in the third degree.

Both individuals were arraigned at the Town of Ashford Court and subsequently remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
