(WNY News Now) – A Lackawanna man has been indicted for allegedly causing a deadly wrong-way collision on Buffalo’s Route 5 Skyway that killed his passenger and injured another driver.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Joshua L. Wright, 27, of Lackawanna, was arraigned Tuesday in Erie County Court on charges related to a June 5 wrong-way crash on the inbound Route 5 Skyway. Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced the indictment, which includes Aggravated Vehicular Homicide (Class B felony), Manslaughter in the Second Degree (Class C felony), and Assault in the Second Degree (Class D violent felony).

According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m. when Wright allegedly drove in the wrong direction while intoxicated and collided head-on with another vehicle. His passenger, 28-year-old Shabrina Grant of Buffalo, was pronounced dead at the scene. Wright and the 46-year-old female driver of the other vehicle were transported to Erie County Medical Center. The injured driver sustained multiple injuries, including a hand injury, a laceration to her knee, and required surgery on her right foot.
During arraignment, the prosecution requested Wright be remanded. Bail was set at $250,000 cash or bond. No return court date has been scheduled. If convicted of the top charge, Wright could face up to 25 years in prison.
DA Keane acknowledged the efforts of Officer Andrea James and the Buffalo Police Department Accident Investigation Unit in the case. Assistant District Attorney Christine O. Murray of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau is prosecuting the case.
As with all criminal cases, Wright is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
