(WNY News Now) – JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — A Jamestown man is facing murder charges after police responded to a suspicious situation early Friday morning and discovered a local resident deceased from an apparent crossbow injury.

According to the Jamestown Police Department, officers were called to a residence on West Fourth Street around 4:54 a.m. on September 12, 2025. Upon arrival, they found 62-year-old Michael R. Jaeckle of Jamestown deceased at the scene.

Investigators say 58-year-old David W. Nelson, also of Jamestown, was taken into custody at the location while in possession of a crossbow. Nelson has been charged with second-degree murder and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is currently being held in the Jamestown City Jail pending arraignment. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Jamestown Police Department is conducting the investigation with assistance from the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Chautauqua County Forensic Investigation Team, New York State Police, Ellicott Police Department, and the Chautauqua County Coroner’s Office.
