(WNY News Now) – All Ripley Water District customers are now required to reduce water usage immediately as drought conditions continue to strain local water supplies.
RIPLEY, N.Y. – The Ripley Water District has issued an emergency water conservation order, effective immediately, for all residential and commercial customers. The directive follows critically low reservoir levels and continued drought conditions across Chautauqua County, where a drought watch remains in effect.
District officials emphasized that recent rainfall has not been enough to replenish water sources, urging all residents to conserve water “until further notice.” The county’s Department of Health is monitoring conditions closely, noting that conservation efforts are vital to maintain safe and adequate water supplies.
Recommended Water-Saving Measures
Officials have outlined several ways customers can help reduce demand:
- Turn off the faucet while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing dishes.
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
- Take shorter showers and turn off the water while lathering.
- Avoid washing vehicles or hosing down sidewalks, decks, and driveways.
- Refrain from watering lawns or filling pools and hot tubs.
- Check for and repair any leaks in faucets, toilets, and pipes.
Residents are also asked to use brooms instead of hoses for cleaning outdoor areas and to thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator or microwave rather than under running water. The Ripley Fire Department has been instructed not to use district water for filling private wells.
Drought Conditions Remain Critical
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) continues to list Chautauqua County under a drought watch. Without significant rainfall in the forecast, authorities warn that water levels will remain dangerously low unless conservation efforts improve.
