If you want your business to truly reflect your values, then you have to make sure that those values are baked into it right from the ground up. This is just as important when it comes to any point you want ot make on eco-friendliness and sustainability as it is for anything else. A lot of companies “greenwash” their operations, making them look a lot better for the environment than they are, which can then end up damaging their reputation when the reality is revealed. Make sure that you’re walking the walk, not just talking the talk, with the following points.

Teach It From The Top Down

A truly sustainable workplace starts with the leader. When you’re serious about committing to environmental responsibility, your team follows suit. Embed sustainable goals into your business meetings and decision-making, and empower your employees to participate. For instance, you can give them paid time off to engage in environmental and community volunteering initiatives, or encourage them to bring green causes to your attention so that you can organise fundraisers to support them.

Make The Workplace More Sustainable

Your commitment to eco-friendly initiatives should show from every part of your daily operations, and one of the best ways to do that is to address waste in the workplace. This can include steps as simple as making sure that the correct recycling bins are available on every floor and in every section of the office. Other steps you can take include switching out lights for more energy-efficient types, installing low-flow water appliances in the bathrooms, and making sure there’s a policy of never leaving digital devices on standby, preventing passive energy consumption.

Choose Sustainable Benefits

You might be able to control the workplace, but with the right benefits, you can help employees live more sustainable lives outside of it, as well. Incentives for public transport, or even better, EV salary sacrifice for procurement, allow you to address the most wasteful part of most workers’ day: their commute. By giving them access to electric vehicles, as well as reducing their taxable salary (without cutting into their overall compensation), you can also make sustainability something that benefits their life more broadly, rather than something that demands continuous sacrifice from them.

Go Back To The Drawing Board With Your Products

If your business relies on the sale of physical products, then it may be worth taking a second look at them. Is there any way to redesign them or their production line that can lower the overall energy and material waste that goes into them or is produced by them? Even if you can’t change the product itself too much, you can invest in recyclable packaging, minimising their ecological footprint in a way that your target market is able to easily see and identify. Take a look at your options and don’t be afraid to let your consumers know with “x% less plastic” icons on your packaging, for instance.

Sustainability can easily be built from the bottom of your business right up to the top. It’s a growing industry, so finding the suppliers you need doesn’t have to be a huge chore.
