In modern professional boxing, great importance, perhaps even excessive importance, is attached to the absence of defeats in a boxer’s record. This trend has emerged relatively recently and is probably largely due to the fact that professional boxers are now much less likely to enter the ring than they were a few decades ago.

The absence of defeats is especially important for promising boxers who are predicted to have a great future, and they themselves, their teams and promoters strive with all their might to enter the title fight with zero defeats, retain it and continue to perform without defeats as world champions.

The most famous boxer in the world to have achieved this is Floyd Mayweather Jr., who ended his career with fifty wins and not a single defeat, and his career, crowned with glory and huge fees, is an example for many boxers.

In the context of this article, champions are defined as all active undefeated boxers who have held the world title, and to ensure the relevance of their achievements, those who are currently ranked by The Ring magazine in their weight categories are taken into account.

Number and representation of undefeated world champions

At the moment (2026), a total of 28 world champions and former world champions who continue to compete at the highest level have no defeats on their record.

Of the seventeen weight categories in professional boxing, such boxers are present in thirteen, although this is somewhat conditional, as among them there are world champions in several weight categories and those who have managed to change weight categories.

At the moment, and this happened just a few days ago, most of the undefeated world champions are in the light heavyweight division, where David Benavidez and David Morrell have joined Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.

There are three undefeated champions in the welterweight, lightweight, bantamweight and minimumweight divisions. There are two in the super welterweight, welterweight, super featherweight and super bantamweight divisions.

Age and number of fights of undefeated world champions

Seventeen undefeated world champions are under 30 years old, which is quite understandable, but there are also quite a few over 30, with the ‘oldest’ being 39-year-old Artur Beterbiev, who, unlike many others, came to the professional ring later in life.

It is also quite understandable that only three of the 28 undefeated champions have fought more than 30 fights in the professional ring, while the other three have fought 10 fights or less. The number of fights is quite an important indicator in this case, and Terence Crawford (41 fights) is the leader in this regard, but here we must also take into account the level of opposition, and, as will be seen below, Crawford has no problems with this.

More interesting is the comparison of the number of world title fights, as, for example, Jaron Ennis already has 32 fights and only one world title fight and only one victory over a former or current world champion.

Title fights and victories over other world champions

In terms of the number of title fights in their careers, Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue are the clear leaders (19 fights), while Dmitry Bivol and Knockout CP Freshmart share third and fourth place (12). They are followed by Alexander Usyk (10), Artur Beterbiev and Devin Haney (8), David Morrell and Junto Nakatan (7), Gervonta Davis and Jesse Rodriguez (6).

Bahram Murtazaliev, Jaron Ennis, Liam Parr, Alberto Puello, Denis Berinchyk, Ryosuke Nishida and Yoshiki Takei have each fought only one world title fight.

Another important comparison in the context of undefeated professional records is the number of victories over world champions or former world champions, which shows the level of opposition.

Naoya Inoue (14) leads the list in this category. He is followed by Terence Crawford (11), Alexander Usyk (8), Jervonta Davis (8), Junto Nakatani and Devin Haney (7), Artur Beterbiev and David Benavidez (5), and Dmitry Bivol and Jesse Rodriguez (4).

Bahram Murtazaliev, Jeyron Ennis, Eimantas Stanionis, Liam Paro, Rafael Espinosa, Yoshiki Takei, and Ginjirō Shigeoki each have one victory over a champion or former world champion. David Morrell and Alberto Puello have yet to achieve such victories.
