(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. — Bishop Michael W. Fisher issued a public statement urging peace and unity after remarks by President Donald Trump concerning Pope Leo XIV.

In his statement, Bishop Fisher emphasized the Pope’s call for an end to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, highlighting the humanitarian toll on civilians, including children, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations.

“The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, rightly invokes the Gospel of Jesus Christ in calling for an end to the war with Iran and the suffering it has inflicted on so many innocent civilians,” Fisher said. He added that continued violence only deepens division and fosters long-term conflict.

Fisher echoed the Pope’s appeal for global leaders and those with influence to prioritize peace efforts. “With Pope Leo, I urge all who have the ability to bring about peace to come together and make it so,” he said.

The bishop stressed that the issue transcends political considerations, framing it as a broader moral responsibility. He called for renewed focus on understanding, reconciliation, and cooperation across cultural and geographic lines.

“This is not about politics but the very cause of humanity,” Fisher said, “and our obligation to seek understanding, reconciliation, and pursue those mutual interests that bind us to one another.”
