(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for central Allegany County, New York, as heavy thunderstorms continue to produce dangerous rainfall and flooding through Monday evening.

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for central Allegany County until 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 6, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

The warning was issued at 3:31 p.m. after Doppler radar detected thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall across the area. Officials said between 2.5 and 3.5 inches of rain had already fallen, with an additional 0.5 to 2 inches possible before the storms move out.

The National Weather Service warned that flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Flooding may impact small creeks and streams, roads, highways, underpasses, urban areas, and other low-lying or poor drainage locations.

Communities included in the warning area include Friendship, Belmont, Angelica, Wellsville, Alfred, Scio, Andover, Almond, West Almond, Birdsall, Knight Creek, and Stannards.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to drive through standing water. The National Weather Service reminds motorists to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

Officials also advise campers, hikers, and anyone near streams or creeks to move to higher ground, as waterways can rise rapidly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 7:30 p.m., and residents should continue monitoring weather updates and be prepared to take action if conditions worsen.
