CASSADAGA – An unnamed male allegedly fled from deputies who responded to Mill Street Tuesday afternoon for a despondent person, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the male fled into a swampy canal behind Mill Street, and members of the Sheriff’s Water Emergency Team (WET) were unable to locate him.

The WET team reportedly utilized a small boat to search further down the canal. The male was located about a half-mile from where he entered the water.

Authorities said he was struggling in the water, and the WET team was able to rescue him and get him to shore safely.

The male subject was evaluated by Cassadaga Fire Department EMS on the scene. Deputies transported the subject to UPMC Hospital for a mental health evaluation. Deputies were assisted at the scene by an officer of the Environmental Conservation Police.
