MAYVILLE – Twenty-three COVID-19 related deaths of residents living in long-term care facilities were reported in Chautauqua County on Friday, the highest single day fatality report thus far.

County health leaders in a statement say the residents died over the last few weeks in long term care facilities.

“COVID-19 cases in long term care facilities are monitored and managed by the New York State Department of Health,” said officials. “Deaths in long term care facilities and hospitals must be reported to the state, not to the County Health Department.”

The county health department was able to identify the deaths from their own independent research. Officials say the state does not notify local health officials of deaths and the health department only reports deaths when they are able to confirm them with a death certificate, from reading obituaries or hearing from family members directly.

Since the pandemic began in March, 75 deaths have been reported in Chautauqua County.

In addition to the new death, the county health department’s COVID-19 Dashboard reported 80 new cases of the virus with 475 now active.

There remain 43 people hospitalized in the county.

The seven-day average percent positivity rate decreased slightly to 9.2 percent.

The number of total cases topped 6,000, with 6,018 reported to date. Of those, 5,468 people have recovered from the illness.

More information released by the health department is posted below:
