MAYVILLE – Even though Chautauqua County health leaders’ okayed high-risk sports this week, they still have concerns about wrestling; and now ask for those activities to be postponed, or even canceled.

The Chautauqua County Health Department joined four other counties from around Western New York to warn against wrestling in a statement on Wednesday.

They’re recommending all school and amateur wrestling teams cancel or postpone their winter seasons.

They say the sport involves a lot of contact, which increases the risk of spreading Coronavirus.

Officials also say masks should not be worn during a wrestling match because they could become a choking hazard.

Last week New York State leaders lifted their ban on high-risk sports, leaving the decision up to counties.

Earlier this week the Chautauqua County Health Department gave the green light for sports deemed high-risk to resume play as early as next week.
