Jamestown Man Behind Bars Following High Speed Police Chase, Crash

JAMESTOWN – A 40-year-old Jamestown man is behind bars following a wild high-speed vehicle chase with police that ended in a crash on the railroad tracks downtown.

Jamestown Police say Michael Newman was arrested last Friday following the pursuit and subsequent crash.

Officers allege Newman fled after police attempted a vehicle stop for a traffic violation in the area of West 8th and Washington Streets just after 9:40 p.m.

Newman continued at a high rate of speed on West 8th Street before turning south on Locust Alley. He then, police say, continued through a driveway off of the alley, striking a parked car.

The man continued, driving through a yard in the area Clinton and West 3rd Streets behind several businesses. At that time he drove down a steep embankment from West 3rd to West 2nd Streets crashing on the railroad tracks.

That’s when police say Newman exited his vehicle and took off on foot. Officers gave chase, eventually taking the man into custody.

Newman, who is on parole in New York, faces several charges including third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, fourth-degree criminal mischief and leaving the scene of an accident.
