CARROLL – Two of Chautauqua County’s popular public parks are slated to open next month.

Brad Bentley, the director of the County Department of Public Facilities, says that Luensman and Erlandson Overview Parks will open to the public on May 5.

Crews spent the morning Wednesday trimming trees at the Erlandson Overview Park on Oak Hill Road in the Town of Carroll.

The park, sitting at an elevation of more than 2,000 feet, is the second highest elevation point in the county. It features a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, including Chautauqua Lake, Onoville Valley and the Allegheny Mountains.

The Luensman Overview Park, on Thayer Road in the Town of Portland, is situated at the top of the Lake Erie escarpment with a view of the lake plain, villages along the north shore and the Canadian south shore.

Both parks will be open from 8:30 a.m. to dusk through November 1, however the restroom facilities will be closed for now.

“We’re still keeping them closed for now but we are keeping a close eye on the CDC guidance as new information comes out,” said Bentley. “We are taking about commonly touched surfaces and making sure COVID is not spread through those surfaces.”

Officials say they will continue to monitor CDC and local health department guidance on when the restroom facilities can be opened.

Reservations are required for any group gathering requiring use of a park gazebo or any gathering over 20 people. For more information visit chqgov.com/parks-and-trails/parks-trails.
