WEST ELLICOTT – The Chautauqua County Coroner is looking into what caused a fatal crash in West Ellicott on Tuesday night.

Town of Ellicott Police tell WNY News Now the single-vehicle crash happened around 7 p.m. on Fairmount Avenue near Butts Avenue.

When first responders arrived on scene, they say a bystander was performing CPR on the 65-year-old driver.

The man, who police say lived in the Jamestown area, was traveling west in his red GMC SUV on Fairmount Avenue when he, presumably unconscious, exited the roadway and hit a parked vehicle in a nearby parking lot.

Police say it is unclear why the man lost consciousness. The man was the only occupant of the vehicle and no one else was injured because of the crash.

The Coroner’s Office is now working to determine the man’s cause of death.

His identity, police say, will be released once his entire family is notified.
