MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County officials say the COVID-19 delta variant is likely contributing to increased community spread countywide

Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel and Chautauqua County Public Health Director Christine Schuyler updated the public on Wednesday morning during a press conference in Mayville.

The county, Schuyler says, is currently under a substantial level of transmission according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We are assuming that are seeing the delta variant here, because of the uptick in cases,” explained Schuyler. “The state Epidemiologist is reporting that 90 percent of cases that they are sequencing are the delta variant.”

With that in mind, she is asking the public to wear masks, regardless of vaccination status, in high-risk areas like public spaces, following previously issued new guidance by the CDC.

As of Tuesday, there are 84 active cases of COVID-19 in the county, with five people hospitalized.
