MAYVILLE – A ceremony remembering the over 3,000 lives lost during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks took place in Chautauqua County on Saturday afternoon.

Hosted by the local American Legion and the Chautauqua County Veterans Council, the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony was held at noon in front of the Chautauqua County Courthouse in Mayville.

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the attacks. The county’s program featured remarks from local dignitaries including the County Veterans Service Agency Director, Commander of the American Legion and President of the Blue Star Mothers Lake Erie chapter.

The program honored and remembered the Americans killed on September 11, 2001 when members of the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four planes and crashed them in the World Trade Center in New York City, the pentagon just outside of Washington, D.C., and a field in Western Pennsylvania.
