PORTLAND – Law enforcement in Chautauqua County are conducting a general search of the rails-to-trails system throughout the county Monday part of their investigation after human remains were found last week.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police K-9 units are leading the effort.

“We are just doing a precautionary check of the trails on the area,” explained Sheriff Jim Quattrone. “Nothing new, looking for potential evidence or additional leads.”

The two agencies are asking the public to avoid the trail system throughout the day as their search takes place.

Last Sunday a hiker found human remains in a wooded area along the “rails to trail” area near Woleben Road in the Town of Portland.

Following an additional search of the area, investigators located a second set of remains nearby.

The Chautauqua County Forensic Investigation Team is working with the Mercyhurst Forensic Anthropology Department in identifying both set of remains, which are both believed to be female.
