MAYVILLE – A retired K-9 with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has passed away.

The Department announced the news of K-9 Drago’s passing in a post on social media late Thursday.

The German Shepherd was partnered with Deputy Jason Beichner in 2011, who accepted the canine as part of his family.

In 2017, Drago was injured during a training exercise. After several surgeries to his left front leg, the appendage had to be amputated. However, that was not the end of his story. Drago was able to return to some limited duties for a few years before retiring.

Recently, Drago became so sick his immune system was compromised and infections spread. On Thursday, he passed away comfortably with Deputy Beichner by his side.

“I brought him to Lakeside Veterinarian where he has been so many times before, he was greeted by amazing people, technicians, vets, colleagues, his representation from law enforcement, he sat in my car and was put to rest, with his head in my hand,” said Beichner. “It was a very sad time.”

Beichner tells us that his is extremely grateful for the community’s well wishes currently headlining social media.

The deputy is continuing his service working with his new partner K-9 Drake since Drago’s retirement.
